I Am Sober alternatives for drinking less, not quitting
I Am Sober counts consecutive sober days. That is the right tool if you have stopped. It is the wrong tool if you still drink and want a number for the week. Four other apps, including us last.
Stay on I Am Sober if you have quit and the unbroken count is the point. Look elsewhere if one drink should be a line in a diary, not day zero.
What I Am Sober does well
A free sobriety counter with a daily pledge, money and time saved, and a large recovery community. One drink resets the day count. That is the design. Sober Plus adds extra workbook items, more addictions and private groups. iPhone and Apple Watch. It is not a drink diary for people who still drink. Price, checked 2026-09-13: Free counter. Sober Plus from about $9.99/month or $39.99/year (ChoosingTherapy, July 2026). Store SKUs vary. We are not affiliated with I Am Sober LLC.
Stay if you want a daily pledge, a large recovery community, and a clock that only moves when you do not drink. The App Store listing calls it a sobriety tracker for recovery. That sentence is the product.
Why people look for an I Am Sober alternative
The mechanic is public: consecutive sober days. A drink is not a sober day, so the run returns to zero. For someone who has stopped, that bright line is the feature. For someone who still drinks, it is a punishment loop: one pint becomes "the streak is dead," and the log stops.
A public App Store review dated 22 July 2024 described hitting reset by accident and being unable to put the date back. That is a support problem as much as a philosophy problem. It is also a reminder that the number lives in their account, not on your device alone.
People also leave because they wanted a drink diary and downloaded a recovery counter. Units, spend and a weekly guideline are a different job. I Am Sober does not pretend to do it.
Four alternatives, if you still drink
Modraly is not first. The first three cover diaries, planned drinking, and coaching.
DrinkControl
Drinking diary, the closest thing to Modraly
Tracks drinks as units, calories and spend, against moderate/low-risk guidelines. Marks dry days and streaks. Data stays on the device. Premium (widgets, longer charts, reminders, CSV, custom drinks) is a subscription or a lifetime unlock. On iPhone since 2011; back on Android. English only.
If you want streaks and an Android version of a unit diary, start here. It is the most direct alternative to Modraly.
Try Dry
Official Dry January app, year-round
The Dry January app from Alcohol Change UK, usable all year. You log dry, drank, or drank as planned. It tracks units, calories and money against a baseline, awards badges (84 added in 2025), runs missions, and keeps dry streaks. Entirely free, no ads. You must create an account. Built around UK units and the 14-unit week.
The right free UK tool if badges and a Dry January frame help. Wrong if you refuse an account, or if you want French verres standards as the unit.
Sunnyside
Moderation with a weekly plan and human coaches
Every Sunday a plan. You log against it. Human coaches by text if you want them, not a chatbot. 15-day trial, then Basic at $99/year or Cutback Coach at $298/year, checked on sunnyside.co on 13 September 2026. Sunnyside Med (US naltrexone) is a separate medical product. Accountability is the product. Its absence is the product here.
Pick it if a person expecting to hear from you is what makes you follow through. Skip it if you want a private count and no programme.
Modraly
Units, spend, calories vs your country guideline
Counts units, spend and calories, and puts the week next to the official line for your country. No account, no Modraly server, no ads, no data collection on free or Premium. The month calendar is fully visible; stats and history stop at 15 days unless you pay. Three favourites on free. Widgets, custom ranges, CSV, custom icons and unlimited history are Premium. An App Clip can log a drink without installing; that log is discarded when you install. Not a coach, not a streak, not Android.
Pick it if you still drink and want the number, on Apple hardware, without a login. Pick something else if you want a programme, a streak, Android, or a full free history.

Common questions
What is the best I Am Sober alternative if I still drink?
I Am Sober is a sober-day counter. If you still drink, a diary is the other job. DrinkControl logs units and still has streaks. Try Dry lets you mark a day as drank as planned. Sunnyside plans the week with a coach. Modraly counts units with no streak to reset. None of them replace recovery support.
Does I Am Sober reset if I have a drink?
Yes. Consecutive sober days are the product. A drinking day is not a sober day, so the count of days in a row goes back to zero. That is honest arithmetic if you have stopped. It is the wrong mechanic if you are logging drinks you still have.
Are there free apps like I Am Sober that are not recovery counters?
Try Dry is free (account required, UK units, badges). DrinkControl is free to log. Modraly is free to log, with 15 days of stats. Nomo is often named as a free sobriety clock; it is still a counter, not a drink diary, so it is not on this page.
Should I stay on I Am Sober?
Yes if you have stopped and the unbroken count, the daily pledge and the community are what you use. Switch if the job is to measure drinks, not days without them.
