You can log drinks without creating an account
Where a drink log lives: on the iPhone, on a company's servers, or in Apple Health. The legal text is the privacy policy.
Last reviewed: 16 August 2026
There is no Modraly server for your drink history. No account, no login, nothing to delete at our end if you leave. The log sits in the app on the iPhone. Optional Apple Health writing and CSV export only run if you choose them.
What "the cloud" means for a drink log
A cloud log means the drinks leave the phone. They sit on a company's servers so you can open the same history on another device, on the web, or after a reinstall. That is convenient. It also means an account, a password, a privacy policy that covers that company, and a copy that remains until you (or they) delete it. Coaching apps need this shape: a coach on another phone cannot read a log that never left yours.
An on-device log never makes that trip. The history is in the app's storage on that iPhone. Reinstalling without a backup, or moving to a new phone without taking a copy, loses it. There is no dashboard at a URL where you review last March from a laptop.
iCloud Backup is a third thing. If the iPhone backs up to iCloud, Apple may include app data in that backup, according to your device settings. That is Apple's backup of the phone, not a Modraly sync account. We do not operate one. The privacy policy says this in those words.
The website waitlist is easy to confuse with an app account. On modraly.com, joining the list sends a name and an email so we can write when the App Store listing is live. That data sits with the waitlist tools named in the privacy policy. It is not your drink history. Deleting the app does not unsubscribe you, and unsubscribing does not delete a log we do not have.
Three models: account vs on-device vs Apple Health only
Account. You create a login. The log syncs. A web app or a coach can see it. Sunnyside and Reframe work this way because the product is a programme: weekly plans, community, human or course-based coaching. The Sunnyside vs Reframe page is about that pair. If you want that help, you are buying the account as part of the product, not as a nuisance screen.
On-device. No sign-up. The diary stays on the phone. Modraly is built this way. PintPal is too, for a different job (rounds). DrinkControl also keeps data on the device; check its current listing for what it syncs to Health. The comparison is the six-app list.
Apple Health only. You can log alcoholic drinks in the Health app without a third-party tracker. That is a health record under Apple's controls, not a weekly guideline comparison, not spend, and not a pint converted into units. Useful if Health is already the place you put everything. Thin if you want a drinking week next to 14 units.
Optional writing to Health is a bridge between the last two models. Modraly can write a sample per drink, and optionally alcohol calories, if you switch that on. Turning the app off later does not retract those samples. You delete them in Health. iCloud Health, if you use it, is Apple's sync of that health record, still not a Modraly account. Local reminders, if you enable them, are scheduled on the device. Subscription status, if you ever buy Premium through the App Store, is an Apple entitlement: we get enough to unlock features, not your card number. The privacy policy lists each of those optional pipes.
What you lose on-device
Last year's weeks are not waiting on a website. The same log does not appear on an iPad unless you move a file. There is no household ledger two people can update, no coach who already knows Tuesday was heavy, and no recovery email if you delete the app without a backup.
Those absences are the product, not unfinished work. A private count that also lives on our servers would not be a private count. If the missing pieces are the reason you would open the app, pick a product with an account. Modraly is then the wrong choice.
Changing phones is the sharp edge. Export a CSV while the old iPhone still unlocks, put the file somewhere you control, then set up the new one. If you relied only on iCloud Backup, restore is Apple's process, not ours, and it restores a lot more than drinks. If you used a computer backup, same story. There is no "log in on the new device and the weeks come back" button, because that button is an account.
A partner who wants to see the week hits the same wall. Showing them the screen is the whole sharing model. That is either enough, or you wanted a household product. PintPal is closer if the job is rounds. A programme app is closer if the job is a third person in the loop. We do not do either.
What you keep
No password for the diary. Nothing to close at a third party when you are done: delete the logs in the app, or delete the app. Health samples already written stay in Apple Health until you remove them there. You can export a CSV and choose where it goes (Files, Mail, another app). We do not receive that file. The current app does not import CSV.
Logging does not require an email. The waitlist on modraly.com is a website form for launch updates. It is separate from the app, and it never sees a drink.
Modraly shows units, spend and calories next to the official weekly figure for your country, on that iPhone, with no streak and no coach. iPhone only. No date for Android.
On-device means off our servers. It does not mean Apple, a backup, or someone with the unlocked phone cannot see the log. The privacy policy is the document that binds.
Modraly is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice. If you need clinical support, none of these models replace it. The NHS and Alcool Info Service are the right starting points.
Free to download. Logging is unlimited, always.
Common questions
Does Apple see my drinks?
Not through Modraly, unless you turn on writing to Apple Health. Then the samples sit in the Health app on your iPhone, under Apple's Health privacy controls. If iCloud Health is on, Apple's Health iCloud rules apply. You can turn Health writing off in Modraly Settings and delete samples in the Health app. The drink log inside Modraly still stays on the device.
What happens if I lose my phone?
The log lives on that iPhone. If the phone used iCloud Backup or a computer backup, Apple may have included app data in the backup, according to your backup settings. That is not a Modraly cloud account. Export a CSV before you change devices if you want a copy you control. There is nothing to download from us, because we do not hold the history.
Is this private browsing?
No. Private browsing discards a session when you close the tab. An on-device drink log is stored in the app until you delete a log, reset the app, or delete the app. It is private from Modraly's servers because there are none for that history. It is not invisible on the phone sitting on the table.
Do I need an account to use Modraly?
No. There is no sign-up screen and no Modraly login. The waitlist on this website is only for email updates before the App Store listing is live. It is not an app account and it does not receive your drinks.
Can I share the log with someone in my household?
Not inside Modraly. There is no shared household, no web dashboard, and no cloud sync between phones. If you want that, you need a product with an account. That is a real trade-off, not a missing checkbox we plan to add.
